May 22 marks the 26th International Biodiversity Day. On May 21, an education event for biodiversity protection kicked off in the Xinbei District, Changzhou. People around the city came together to bring biodiversity into focus, through activities that connected them to nature.

During the event, a themed exhibition was unveiled, based on the preliminary findings from the second-round territory-wide biodiversity baseline survey. The exhibition provided a detailed overview of the distribution of various species in Changzhou, including birds, aquatic organisms, terrestrial insects, macrofungi, bryophytes, and lichens. It also featured comprehensive information on a range of rare animals and newly discovered species. Specimens of distinctive local species, such as the Chinese freshwater razor clam, were displayed on site, offering visitors a vivid glimpse into Changzhou's rich biodiversity resources.

The event also invited veteran bird and insect photographers to share their experiences of patiently waiting in the field to capture wildlife images. Students took part in an outdoor observation activity at the Sanjiangkou Park, experiencing the biodiversity around them firsthand.

With unique natural landscape featuring three lakes, five mountains and five ecological corridors, Changzhou boasts abundant biodiversity resources. Since 2024, the city has taken the lead in Jiangsu to launch the second round of a comprehensive biodiversity baseline survey across the entire city. As of date, the survey has recorded over 4700 species, including 233 rare species. Researchers have also identified five species new to global records, comprising two insect species and three lichen species, demonstrating remarkable achievements in biodiversity conservation.

The complete findings of the survey will be published in June this year. The themed exhibition will run through June 5, and interested visitors are welcome to visit the Ecological Conservation Education Base in the Xinbei District to view the exhibition.
