The national finals of the 2025 China Innovation Methods Competition recently concluded in Shandong Province. Two companies from the Changzhou Economic Development Zone — Zenith Steel Group and NR Electric — each earned a national third-place award, adding two more honors to Changzhou’s record in technological innovation.
Zenith Steel’s entry, “Innovative R&D for Improved Production and Efficiency of Specialty Steel Based on TRIZ,” applied systematic innovation methodologies to tackle quality-control challenges in high-speed slab casting. The project achieved the world’s first stable production of high-grade specialty steel through high-speed continuous casting. Annual benefits include reducing energy consumption by approximately 12,000 tons of standard coal, cutting carbon emissions by 32,000 tons, and generating an additional 2.335 billion yuan in output value.
NR Electric’s project, “Research on Key Technologies for Measurement Safety in UHV Transmission Equipment Based on TRIZ,” addressed major challenges in ultra-high-voltage DC transmission, including low shunt measurement accuracy, slow signal response speeds, and short insulation medium lifespans. The project’s outcomes have since been applied in more than 20 major domestic and international DC transmission projects, with related product sales totaling 1.73 billion yuan.
Jointly organized by the China Association for Science and Technology and local governments, the China Innovation Methods Competition is a major national platform showcasing advances in science and technology innovation. This year’s event attracted 2,289 technology enterprises, 7,139 innovation projects, and nearly 22,000 professionals from 31 regional divisions across China, spanning industries such as petrochemicals, power equipment, automotive manufacturing, aerospace, and next-generation information technology.
Since Changzhou first began participating in 2020, the city has now earned nine national awards and 46 provincial honors in the competition, underscoring its strong momentum in scientific and technological innovation.
