“It’s sweet and delicious!” “The event was so interesting—it gave me a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.” On May 17, the fourth annual “International Family Day” in Xinbei district was held at Changzhou Xinbo Longquan Distillery Co., Ltd. Over 20 expats and their families from countries including Germany, Italy, and Ukraine, along with international students from Changzhou Institute of Technology, visited “Xinbo Longquan” to experience the charm of a time-honored Chinese brand—an embodiment of China’s commercial heritage and traditional culture.
At the event, the participants first entered the intangible cultural heritage workshop, where they witnessed the traditional techniques of Chinese rice wine brewing. From soaking the rice and steaming it to fermentation and sealing it in jars, they appreciated the craftsmanship and wisdom involved in every meticulous step.
Next, they joined General Manager Jiang Jumei to learn how to make sweet fermented rice wine. “First, take glutinous rice that has been pre-steamed and mixed with yeast, press it into a bowl, dig a small hole in the center, and then let it ferment at 28–30°C for 48 hours. Once the liquid rises above the rice, it’s ready to eat.”
Meanwhile, innovative dishes such as osmanthus rice wine–flavored bubble tea, glutinous rice balls stewed with sweet fermented rice, and flower-topped steamed buns won high praise from the international guests.
Xinbei is one of the most densely populated areas for expats in Jiangsu province. It is home to more than 2,100 foreign-invested enterprises, including 53 projects funded by 36 Fortune 500 companies, with total foreign investment exceeding USD 16 billion.
This marks the third “International Family Day” event with the ongoing theme of “Exploring Traditional Chinese Culture.” It offers expats the chance to engage with intangible cultural heritage while experiencing the district’s appeal as both a livable and business-friendly environment. In the second half of the year, a new event series themed around “Fragrance as a Bridge” will launch with a focus on tea, inviting participants to “seek flavor” in Xinbei and explore new perspectives on the integration of Eastern and Western cultures.
