Marking the 988th anniversary of the birth of Su Shi (Su Dongpo) in 2025, Changzhou Library has launched a themed cultural month celebrating the legacy of the renowned Song Dynasty scholar. Over 200 local residents recently participated in two signature events that blended literary appreciation with traditional Chinese arts.
Participants explored Su Dongpo's poetic connection with fragrances in "Following the Scent: A Journey with Su Dongpo," an interactive incense ceremony led by Zhuang Kaibo, a National Intangible Cultural Heritage inheritor. Zhuang introduced the history of incense culture and traditional incense-blending techniques, guiding 12 parent-child families in creating their own incense products.
The festival also featured a book-sharing session for Dongpo's Return to the North. Authors Shao Pengyu and Shao Yujian joined Zhao Shiping, president of the Changzhou Su Dongpo Research Association, in a discussion on the final stage of Su Dongpo's life—from his imperial pardon and northward journey to his passing in Changzhou.
The celebration continues through early January with more events, including a sharing of Su Dongpo's poems about Changzhou, an afternoon poetry-copying and guqin appreciation session inspired by Su Dongpo, and a lecture on his connection with traditional Chinese zither music, offering readers further opportunities to engage with the enduring cultural legacy of Su Dongpo.
