Over the past year, Changzhou has achieved a major milestone in environmental protection, completing 5,410 pollution prevention and control tasks across the city. For the first time, Changdang Lake was classified as a good-quality lake, with its water quality reaching Grade III. Meanwhile, multiple air and water quality indicators has reached the best results ever recorded.
Water environment governance has delivered notable results. Total phosphorus levels in Changzhou waters decreased by 4.7 percent year on year. The proportion of national- and provincial-controlled monitoring sections meeting or exceeding Grade III reached 90 percent and 96.1 percent, respectively. The ecological recovery of Changdang Lake has made historic progress, as the lake achieved Grade III water quality for the first time, and the number of aquatic species increased to 800.
In terms of air quality, Changzhou has focused on structural adjustments in energy, transportation, and land use, while taking a coordinated approach to controlling emissions from industrial sources, mobile sources, dust, and everyday non-point sources. A total of 308 air pollution control projects have been completed. As of December 24, the city’s average PM2.5 concentration stood at 30.7 micrograms per cubic meter, and was expected to meet China’s national Grade II standard for the fourth consecutive year.
Ecological conservation has been advanced with strong momentum. Changzhou has taken the lead in Jiangsu in launching the second round of baseline biodiversity surveys, preliminarily documenting 4,210 species—an increase of 1,704 species compared with the first round. Progress has also accelerated on the provincial-level integrated mountain–river–forest–farmland–lake–grassland restoration demonstration project in the Taihu Lake basin, with ecological protection and restoration carried out across an area of 304.48 hectares.
In addition, by strengthening financial support and improving the ecological and environmental monitoring system, Changzhou has further enhanced its environmental governance capacity, laying a solid financial and technical foundation for safeguarding blue skies and clear waters.
