A new project is set to give fresh impetus to the development of the synthetic biology industry in Changzhou. On August 5, Jiangsu Canopus Wisdom Medical Technology Co., Ltd. and the research team led by Deng Zixin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and honorary dean of the School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, signed an agreement at the West Taihu Lake Science and Technology Industrial Park to jointly advance the R&D and commercialization of recombinant humanized collagen.

The project will focus on the development of four types of recombinant humanized collagen materials: short-chain and full-length single-chain recombinant humanized type III collagen, as well as recombinant humanized type I and type XVII collagen. Drawing on Academician Deng’s team’s expertise and technology platforms in synthetic biology, the project will establish an integrated, independently controlled process covering strain construction, fermentation, separation and purification, and collagen production. The resulting product portfolio will serve both medical applications and functional skincare.

On the technology side, the project aims to advance the development of high-molecular-weight recombinant humanized type III collagen and address technical challenges associated with the assembly and aggregation of short collagen fragments. On the industrial side, Canopus Medical will invest RMB 50 million to build a fermentation production line with an annual capacity of 10 metric tons, covering the entire process from strain construction to fermentation, separation and purification, and collagen production.

The project will also leverage a national key laboratory to build an integrated technology platform spanning genetic engineering, protein design, strain optimization and AI, strengthening capabilities across the R&D process.

Synthetic biology is a key sector in Wujin district’s “35X” modern industrial system. As a major hub for the sector, West Taihu Lake Science and Technology Industrial Park has focused on high-end healthcare and cultivated a number of leading companies, including Boyi Biological, Trautec Medical and Canopus. It is also home to research and innovation platforms such as the Changzhou West Taihu Institute for Frontier Technology of Cell Therapy and the Changzhou Pharmaceutical Industry Innovation Center. The park is stepping up industry-academia-research collaboration to accelerate the commercialization of scientific and technological advances.
