Recently, the CALB, a company based in Changzhou, has announced a landmark project in Hong Kong's green transition: the successful delivery of the first batch of five pure-electric cargo vessels for the Environmental Protection Department's waste transport operations. Among them, the vessel "New North Lantau" has officially set sail as Hong Kong's first operational electric cargo ship, marking a pivotal step toward zero-carbon island shipping.

The vessel, primarily undertaking the shipment of containerized waste between North Lantau and outlying islands, measures 69.2 meters in length and is a 142-TEU container ship, equipped with two 1,935 kWh containerized battery systems.

It is reported that the vessel is powered by CALB's "ZHIYUAN" marine battery systems. Specifically optimized for maritime applications, this battery not only meets the demands of long-term vessel operations but also demonstrates strong environmental adaptability. It supports 2C continuous and 4C peak charge and discharge rates, making it well-suited for the high-frequency, short-haul transport routes between outlying islands, significantly enhancing operational efficiency.

With these new electric vessels in service, traditional diesel-powered ships will gradually be phased out, effectively cutting carbon emissions from maritime transport. This project also serves as a pioneering model for green urban waste logistics in Hong Kong.

In the past few years, CALB has continued to advance in the electrification of vessels, achieving multiple industry breakthroughs. It has obtained a number of international certifications, including those from the American Bureau of Shipping and DNV, becoming the first company in China to do so. Its marine battery systems have also been proven reliable through ongoing validation across a wide range of waters, vessel types, and operating conditions.
