The recently released 2025 China Major Cities Commuting Report highlights Changzhou’s exceptional performance in urban mobility. With an average one-way commute of just 26 minutes over 5.5 kilometers, the city ranks second nationwide in commuting efficiency and first among Type I large cities (population 3-5 million). This achievement reflects seven consecutive years of top-tier Traffic Health Index rankings, thanks to sustained optimization of signal timing, traffic flow management, and smart transportation technologies.

To enhance commuting efficiency, Changzhou’s traffic authorities have upgraded the city’s traffic signals through a round-the-clock adaptive optimization system, covering all 1,573 signalized intersections with hierarchical inspection protocols. The city now boasts 54 green-wave-coordinated routes spanning 308 kilometers, cutting average intersection stops by 75% per vehicle trip. During holidays, 585 major intersections automatically shift to special timing schemes, with weekend patterns for short breaks and dedicated settings for peak periods like Spring Festival and National Day.

Since 2025, targeted interventions—including reversible lanes, staggered flow strategies, and intersection redesigns—have resolved 15 chronic bottlenecks, such as the five-way Qinglong West Road/Zhulin East Road junction. These improvements have increased urban arterial speeds by 12% while reducing vehicle delays by 16%, significantly enhancing road network fluidity.

Despite large-scale infrastructure projects like Metro Line 5 and the Tenglong Smart Expressway, traffic disruptions remain minimal due to customized mitigation plans for all 99 long-term construction sites. Notably, construction at 17 downtown Metro Line 5 stations (including Huayuan and Cuizhu) has progressed smoothly, with surrounding traffic remaining orderly.

Further boosting efficiency, a school-specific traffic optimization program has upgraded 788 school zones. Innovative measures—such as dedicated student shuttles, 27 underground pickup hubs, and parent-volunteer traffic guidance—have greatly eased congestion in these areas.
