The Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism has recently released its spring recommendations for rural micro-getaway self-drive routes under the “Charm of Jiangsu” program, with the Tianmu Lake route in Liyang, Changzhou selected among them.
Centered on the theme of “water and culture,” the recommended routes connect destinations along rivers, lakes and coastal areas, offering smooth, one-way itineraries designed for short and leisurely trips. The routes integrate a wide range of experiences, including flower viewing, sightseeing, family-friendly activities, pet encounters, local cuisine, boutique guesthouses and cultural consumption, catering to the growing demand for rural micro-getaways.
The Tianmu Lake route, themed “Nanshan Bamboo Charm, Discover Beautiful Changzhou,” is built around Tianmu Lake—often known as the “Pearl of the South Yangtze”—and follows Liyang’s No. 1 Road. It combines natural scenery, local specialties and immersive countryside experiences into a cohesive self-drive journey.
Key highlights along the route include the Nanshan Bamboo Sea scenic area, where visitors can take cable cars for panoramic views of vast bamboo forests or walk through shaded trails while enjoying the fresh, oxygen-rich air. The route also features local signature cuisine such as Tianmu Lake fish head casserole.
Several distinctive villages are linked along the way. Shenxijie Village preserves the charm of traditional rural architecture and offers boutique stays such as Three Flowers Inn and Wanqiu Mountain Retreat. Wangjia Village blends pastoral scenery with adventure experiences, featuring a popular photo spot known as “Lost Realm,” as well as themed sites including a military-style camp, a mine café and a waterfall-side coffee spot. Guilin Village focuses on forest-style leisure, with scenic hiking trails and a range of accommodations including Hentique Resort and the pet-friendly Mengshe Hotel. Shitang Village offers a mix of art workshops, handicraft experiences and interactive farming activities.
The inclusion of the Tianmu Lake route on the provincial recommendation list highlights its strength in integrating tourism resources and services, while moving beyond traditional single-site sightseeing. By linking dispersed attractions into a cohesive journey, the route provides visitors from the Yangtze River Delta and beyond with a high-quality, officially endorsed option for short rural getaways, supporting the high-quality development of rural tourism.
