Vertilite Co., Ltd., a leading Chinese developer and manufacturer of optical chips, signed an agreement on August 11 to establish a new R&D and manufacturing base for high-end optical communication chips and devices in Changzhou. The project marks a major step in the company’s expansion and is expected to strengthen Changzhou’s optical semiconductor industry and accelerate the development of high-end optical communication technologies.
Li Baiping, secretary of the CPC Changzhou Municipal Committee, and Zhou Wei, mayor of Changzhou Municipal People’s Government, together with Zhao Li, chairman of Vertilite, and Chen Xiaochi, general manager of Vertilite, witnessed the signing ceremony.
Li Baiping and Zhou Wei congratulated Vertilite on the project. Li said that since Vertilite established operations in Wujin National High-tech Industrial Development Zone in 2018, the company has made continuous breakthroughs in compound semiconductor technologies, including vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) chips, contributing to the development of Changzhou’s integrated circuit industry.
With global demand for AI computing and high-speed optical communications growing rapidly, Li called on Vertilite to use the project as an opportunity to accelerate breakthroughs in key technologies and further leverage its role as an industry leader to attract more high-quality upstream and downstream companies and innovation resources. These efforts, he said, would help upgrade Changzhou’s semiconductor industry and drive its development toward higher value-added segments.
Changzhou will continue to provide strong support and high-quality services to help the project come on stream and reach its full potential as soon as possible, Li added.
Zhao Li expressed appreciation for Changzhou’s continued support for Vertilite and outlined the company’s business development and future plans. He said the agreement marked an important milestone for Vertilite. The new project will focus on the R&D and mass production of high-end indium phosphide (InP) laser chips, with the aim of building a leading optical chip R&D and manufacturing base in China in terms of both scale and technology.
Vertilite will continue to capitalize on opportunities arising from the industry’s development, increase investment in R&D, accelerate commercialization and attract high-level talent from China and abroad, Zhao said.
Founded in 2015, Vertilite has developed into one of the few integrated device manufacturer (IDM) companies in China capable of mass-producing both gallium arsenide (GaAs) and indium phosphide (InP) optical chips through an end-to-end proprietary technology platform. The company focuses on optical chips and has developed a broad product portfolio serving consumer electronics 3D sensing, automotive-grade LiDAR and high-speed optical communications. Its products have been deployed in consumer electronics, automotive electronics and optical communications, according to the company.
The new project represents a total investment of approximately RMB 5 billion. It will focus on building R&D and mass-production lines for high-end InP laser chips, further supporting the development of China’s domestic optical communication chip industry.
