On February 4, Phase I of ARLANXEO’s hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) project officially commenced operations at Changzhou National Hi-Tech District, injecting new momentum into the development of new energy, intelligent manufacturing and related sectors. Pan Dongling, vice mayor of Changzhou, attended the event.

ARLANXEO is one of the world’s largest suppliers of synthetic rubber, focusing on the development, production and sale of high-performance rubber materials. The company reports annual sales of approximately USD 3.5 billion and operates 10 production facilities and four technology centers across eight countries. Its products are widely used in industries including automotive, tires, electrical appliances, construction, and oil and gas.

ARLANXEO High Performance Elastomers (Changzhou) Co., Ltd. was established in 2016 with a total investment of USD 733 million and a designed annual capacity of approximately 160,000 tons of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber. In March 2024, the ARLANXEO Group increased its registered capital by $70 million to develop a specialty high-performance HNBR project with a total investment of USD 210 million.

The new plant is located within ARLANXEO’s Changzhou manufacturing base, adjacent to its existing EPDM facility and the Asia Regional Technology Center. Designed as a modern, industry-leading production facility, the project has a total planned annual capacity of 5,000 tons, with Phase I capacity at 2,500 tons. It will focus on the production of high-performance Therban® hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber, which is used in applications requiring exceptional durability and reliability under extreme conditions, including automotive components, oil and gas systems, industrial equipment, aerospace applications, and next-generation electrified mobility batteries.

The project is expected to help meet domestic demand for high-end HNBR products that have long relied on imports, align closely with the district’s strategic focus on new energy and intelligent manufacturing, and provide critical material support for regional industrial upgrading.
