Changzhou launches 2026 drainage facility cleaning campaign

To ensure Changzhou can effectively respond to heavy rainfall during the flood season, the Municipal Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau has, since this March, guided the districts' authorities to fully launch the 2026 drainage maintenance campaign. Taking advantage of the pre-flood season window, efforts have focused on dredging and clearing municipal drainage pipelines and pumping stations, so as to keep the drainage system running smoothly.

It is reported that this pre-flood season operation provides full-coverage maintenance of drainage facilities, with a focus on high-pressure areas such as major municipal roads, interchanges and underpasses, and sunken tunnels.

Professional dredging teams, working according to on-site requirements, deploy a range of equipment—including high-pressure jetting trucks and vacuum suction vehicles—and adopt combined methods such as "manual + mechanical," "jetting + suction," and "grabbing + manual clearing" to carry out comprehensive cleaning of the drainage system. The removed sludge is then transported to designated treatment facilities for safe and environmentally sound disposal.

As of date, the city has completed the clearing of 300 kilometers of stormwater pipelines, cleaned more than 24,000 catch basins, upgraded 20 waterlogging-prone locations, and identified and rectified seven potential hazards.

Before the flood season, it is expected that a total of about 1,250 kilometers of drainage pipelines, over 80,000 manholes, and 31 pumping stations will have undergone cleaning and maintenance.
