Changzhou will ring in 2026 with the debut of its first feline-themed cultural quarter, as the historic Damiao Lane is reintroduced through a creative renewal that blends heritage with contemporary urban culture.
Traditionally, the name “Damiao” referred to the area’s grand temple heritage. In the latest revitalization, the lane adopts the playful homophone “Dameow” — meaning “Big Cat” — which has inspired a cat-themed concept designed to make the historic neighborhood more approachable and engaging for today’s visitors. From December 31, 2025 to January 3, 2026, the renewed Damiao Lane · Big Meow Alley will open to the public alongside a New Year fair titled “Meow Fortune Street · A Lucky New Year.”
Combining traditional holiday customs with light-hearted, creative experiences, the event will feature a series of cat-inspired activities aimed at offering residents and visitors a relaxed festive destination, while showcasing a new model of culture-commerce-tourism integration in Changzhou’s old downtown.
Damiao Lane has long been part of the city’s collective memory, anchored in the centuries-old City God Temple and reflecting Changzhou’s urban evolution. As part of an ongoing organic renewal program, Changzhou Xinyun Urban Development Group has upgraded the area around three key landmarks: the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, the Changzhou TV Tower and a nearly 300-year-old ginkgo tree.
The cat-themed reinterpretation — built around a homophonic play on the lane’s original name — adds a contemporary layer to the historic setting, bringing together tradition, popular culture and creative design to enhance the district’s appeal as a cultural and leisure destination.
A highlight of the opening will take place on New Year’s Eve, when an outdoor musical gala titled “Echoes of Time” is staged on December 31. Centered on the theme of time, the event will combine musical theatre excerpts with a TV Tower light show, a countdown ceremony beneath the ancient ginkgo tree and a festive carnival atmosphere to welcome 2026.
Throughout the holiday period, themed markets and interactive parades will animate the street, featuring cultural and creative products as well as New Year gift items. On New Year’s Day, a selection of popular food brands will offer limited-time holiday treats, allowing visitors to enjoy seasonal flavors while strolling through the renewed block.
Indoor cultural programs will run in parallel. The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall will present an exhibition titled “Wintering Like a Cat,” using visual storytelling and children’s artwork to convey a sense of warmth and slower-paced winter living. On the afternoon of January 1, a pet-friendly New Year gathering will provide a casual social space for cat owners and enthusiasts, with interactive displays and hands-on activities designed to share festive wishes.
