Changzhou has launched a major upgrade of its main sewage pipeline network, with work covering key sections of Changjiang Road, Qingyang Road, Meilin Road, Beitaiping Bridge, Guanhe Middle Road and Feilong Road. The project is being carried out by the Changzhou Municipal Drainage Management Office.

Pre-construction inspections found a range of structural and functional problems in the existing sewage pipelines along Changjiang Road, Qingyang Road and other sections. Structural defects included cracks, deformation, misaligned and disconnected pipe joints, as well as groundwater infiltration, while sediment buildup, scaling and blockages were also found inside the pipes.

To address these problems, the project is taking a three-pronged approach covering pipeline rehabilitation, system optimization and stormwater drainage improvements, with the aim of making the city's drainage network more resilient and efficient.

Seriously damaged or deformed sections will be replaced through conventional excavation and reconstruction. Where conditions permit, trenchless rehabilitation methods, including full-section rehabilitation and spot repairs, will be used. Compared with conventional excavation, these methods can shorten construction times and reduce costs while minimizing disruption from dust and construction noise.

The project will also use pipe jacking to install new sewage pipes with a diameter of 0.8 meters. The new pipes will connect the main sewage lines along Yongning Road and Longcheng Avenue and optimize the pipeline network leading to the Changchai Pump Station, improving the efficiency of sewage collection and conveyance in the area. Pipe jacking is an established trenchless method for installing pipelines while minimizing surface excavation.

Stormwater drainage will also be upgraded in areas prone to waterlogging during the rainy season or where stormwater connections have been damaged. The project will add or upgrade stormwater inlets and replace connecting pipes to remove drainage bottlenecks and improve the collection and discharge of rainwater.

Once completed, the project will strengthen key sections of Changzhou's urban drainage infrastructure, improve the performance of both sewage and stormwater systems, and enhance the city's ability to cope with heavy rainfall and other drainage challenges.

The project is scheduled for completion by the end of November 2026.
