Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) has obtained approval to build Jiangsu province's first battery swap station for new-energy heavy-duty trucks along expressways, with construction set to begin at the Furong Service Area on the Shanghai-Wuhan Expressway (Hu-Wu Expressway) in Changzhou Economic Development Zone. The facility will feature two swap stations – one each for northbound and southbound traffic.
Local authorities moved swiftly to facilitate the project, with Changzhou Economic Development Zone establishing a special task force immediately after CATL submitted its proposal on April 8. The entire approval process, from initial discussions to final filing, took just nine days – a demonstration of Changzhou’s administrative efficiency.
The station will deploy CATL's proprietary QIJI battery swap solution, significantly faster than conventional charging methods. The system is designed to meet the demanding requirements of heavy-duty electric trucks operating on major freight routes like the Hu-Wu Expressway.
The project represents an expansion of the strategic partnership between Changzhou and CATL, following their August 2025 framework agreement that identified battery-swap infrastructure as one of six key areas for cooperation. This latest development shifts their collaboration from manufacturing into practical, large-scale applications of new-energy technology.
