On May 16, the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment and the Changzhou Municipal People’s Government jointly hosted the province’s flagship event marking the International Day for Biodiversity in Liyang, a county-level city under Changzhou’s administration. Themed around the “5·22 International Day for Biodiversity,” the event also launched the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) Taihu Alliance. Attendees included Yin Rongyao, deputy director-general of the Jiangsu Department of Ecology and Environment, and Ye Minghua, deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Changzhou Municipal People’s Congress.
The event followed the recent promulgation of the Jiangsu Provincial Regulation on Ecological and Environmental Protection, a key legislative step to institutionalize and legalize biodiversity protection across the province.
The KM-GBF Taihu Alliance—a joint ecological initiative by Huzhou, Wuxi, Suzhou, and Changzhou to enhance transboundary biodiversity conservation—officially launched with representatives from the four cities adopting a joint declaration and signing a digital commitment. This marks the beginning of coordinated efforts to implement the framework’s targets across the Taihu Lake Basin.
The event also featured best-practice sharing sessions on biodiversity conservation. Participants toured key conservation sites in Liyang, including the Tianmu Lake Biodiversity Exhibition Hall, Tianmu Lake Wetland Park, and Tianmu Lake Nature School, gaining insights into Changzhou’s progress and achievements in biodiversity preservation.
