Changzhou saw a consumption boom during the week-long Spring Festival holiday as many people stayed put to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Data released by the Commerce Bureau of Changzhou showed that during the holiday period, 51 of the city’s closely-watched retailers including catering businesses, and its nine major shopping malls saw their sales more than doubled.

Their sales volume reached 598.368 million yuan (about 92.579 million U.S. dollars), an increase of 189.5 percent over the same period last year.

The Lingjiatang Wholesale Market for Agricultural Products registered 739.456 million yuan (about 114.417 million U.S. dollars) in sales during the same period, up 2.8 percent year-on-year.

The Spring Festival holiday, also known as the Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year, lasted from Feb 11 to 17 this year.
