What’s ‘Chunyun’?

It is a 40-day travel frenzy surrounding the Chinese Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival.

This year’s Spring Festival falls on Jan 28. “Chunyun” begins on Jan 13 and lasts until Feb 21.

How large is the migration?

3 billion trips will be made during Chunyun, equivalent to more than 40% world’s population travels during the holiday period.

What’s the toughest part?

Within 1 minute, tickets of 60 percent trains sold out. 43 days prior to departure tickets for most sought-after airlines should be booked.

What’s new this year?

Road and rail are still main travel options, but airlines will see biggest surge. Car rentals become a new trend in first-tier cities.

70% of the total train tickets were bought via internet. 60% of the tickets bought via internet were purchased via mobile phone apps. Free Wi-Fi service will be available on many trains and coaches. Taxi-hailing service has been added to train tickets booking website. For first time, face recognition technology will be used during check-in.
